Gretchen Rossi and Slade Smiley have too many skeletons in the closet to deflect attention away from them as they go after Brooks Ayers.
The Real Housewives of Orange County couple have a manufactured relationship, created and conceived by Scott Dunlop, creator and executive producer of the Orange County franchise. He and Slade were neighbors in Coto de Caza back in 2006, before Slade lost his house to foreclosure. Slade, along with Jo de la Rosa, were brought on to the show as actors playing a role Scott Dunlop designed for them.
By the end of season 2, Jo left the show, leaving no role for Slade. By then, the only other single housewife, Lauri Waring, who dated Slade briefly, had moved on to George Peterson. Even then, Slade was seen on one episode, very briefly, moving out of the house he lost.
Dunlop tried again, this time with the short-lived spin-off, “Date My Ex’, starring Jo de la Rosa and Slade. It was so bad it didn’t even qualify as campy. it’s buried even deeper than “Being Bobby Brown“ in the Bravo vaults.
What’s the perfect solution to the “Slade Smiley’s not on television “ dilemma? Pair him with newcomer Gretchen Rossi, who lost her storyline when she lost Jeff Beitzel to cancer. Problem? Gretchen already had a boyfriend, Jay Photoglou, to whom she had apparently promised a role to on Season 5.
The dirty deed went down in February, 2009, after Tamra Barney outted her relationship with Jay at the reunion.
Less than two weeks later, Slade Smiley was arrested at Gretchen Rossi’s house and his drivers license was revoked for failure to pay child support. Jay called the police after Gretchen wouldn’t let him get his belongings out of her house, Slade’s car was in the driveway with expired tags, so the police ran a make on him.
Three days later, Gretchen got a restraining order against Jay. It was later dropped when Gretchen did not show up for court.
In the meantime, an angry, hurt Jay Photoglou went after Gretchen in court, with a vengeance. Lawsuit after lawsuit after counter-suit ensued, until Bravo stepped in and said make this thing go away. So, we have a “friendship” between Tamra and Gretchen.
Not saying that Brooks Ayers is not wrong….but when did two wrongs start making a right?
