We’ve seen it before, reality show “stars” getting that first taste of “showbiz’ in the first season of their shows, and letting the fame and recognition go to their heads.
NeNe Leakes of the Real Housewives of Atlanta, Vicki Gunvalson of the Real Housewives of Orange County, Teresa Giudice of the Real Housewives of New Jersey all went “showbiz crazy” after the first season of their shows.
Now we have Sonja Morgan of the Real Housewives of New York, as the self-proclaimed “ gay icon” and the ugly side of fame we saw Episode 2. Making sure no one else could speak at the gay rights event, then making a fool of herself during her speech, and throwing Alex McCord out of her house….wow…just wow.
In her Bravo blog, this is what Sonja had to say:
Marriage Equality of NY did not cancel Simon after booking him to speak. I would never muscle someone out, and push my way in. Not my style. He was NOT speaking when MENY first asked me to speak in the spring, and they made that clear to me when I asked who I would be slated to speak with and who my company was. They told me that I would be the only one from our show. MENY had let me know that Alex planned on marching and that Jill would be on the printed materials. They had said they would be happy if I marched, but it was not necessary.
Simon van Kempen was clearly livid by this turn of events. In his Liberace jacket, he was prepared to speak. When the housewives gathered at Alex and Simon’s home, Simon recited his speech, revealing that he got his green card because he was marrying Alexandra, not Alexander. Bizarre.
MENY was clearly thrilled to have a Morgan leading the march. Poor Alex. Too bad so many mixed messages were sent out by the organization. Adding to her humiliation, look at this flyer for the event on the night of the episode:
What the organizers say:
“Please join The Real Housewives of New York’s Alex McCord and her husband Simon van Kempen as they HOST a special viewing of the Season 4 episode featuring MENY’s 2010 NYC Wedding March! $1 from every drink sold will go to MENY (upstairs bar only) Special Guests…”

As LuAnn, Jill (last week) and Sonja continue to look down upon Alex, we realize the irony of all this. Marriage equality for gays; no equality among the “money can’t buy you class” crowd.
You did great, Sonja. How’s that bankruptcy thing going for you?

Sonja’s head is about ready to EXPLODE. She really thinks very highly of herself, in EVERY way. Regardless of what the organizers of the event communicated or miscommincated, why would she not allow Simon to speak. I’m not really fans of either or them, but, come on, what’s the difference?? Just goes to show you that the 199 comments that she made all through the day stating it was “HER DAY”, and so glad her friends could support her on “HER BIG DAY”, you would have thought she was getting married herself. Gay Icon? That ralley could have been for picking up dog poo, for all she cared!!!!!!! As long as her name was on it, and she was FRONT and CENTER. I thought that Jill was obnoxious, however, Jill holds NO CANDLE to the Sonja Monster. She is so FULL of herself, it’s hard to imagine anyone else fitting in a room with her….. Oh, and did you guys see the HAT she wears next week????? WTF????????
Nothing was missed by Simon not being able to give his speech. Simon and Alex as broken records saying “it’s about this, it’s not about that, it’s about this, it’s about, it’s about…” Well, it was NOT about a straight (?) man getting a green card, was it? Simon and Alex should have just taken it and zipped it when they found out they weren’t speaking. If the organizers really wanted them to, they wouldn’t have agreed to Sonja’s condition. Obviously, they cared more about having her. Silex shouldn’t have embarrassed themselves further by throwing a hissyfit about it.
Sonja is boring and is always posing. I see nothing authentic in her at all. I think Jill ate some humble pie after last season and is doing better. At least Jill can be authentic. Luanne is boring, but I think she’s authentic at least. Alex is annoying, but interesting (much more interesting than Sonja). Kelly is interesting and funny. The new one hasn’t sparked any interest from me yet. So we’ll see! Last season SUCKED! I’m just glad we’ve moved on from the Jill/Bethany fight. Oh, and Ramona is annoying too. Sometimes I fast forward through the Luann and Sonja bits because I can watch “annoying” but can’t tolerate boring.
AND the fact that much of the season was reshot says enough.
Sorry…lol…Alexander vs Alexandra. That really didn’t make sense!
While I wholeheartedly support the Simon-is-gay assumption, I took his comment as him simply saying that HAD he been (openly) gay, and it was an “Alexander” vs “Alexander”….he never would’ve had the same rights. Does that make sense? I could see that comment even from a straight man who supported gay rights. As far as Ms. Morgan goes, anyone who caught WWH afterwards caught her completely contradict herself by first saying that the organizers knew nothing about her involvement in the show, then saying a couple minutes later that SHE had to tell THEM that she didn’t want to be asked to do it simply because of her involvement in the show. What?
Oh God…one season and everyone is a STAR. And each one believes she is the only STAR of the show and it would be nothing without her. Amazing how each one has been STAR-STRUCK and in love with themselves. Personally I can’t stand any of them anymore. Contrived or not…normal women don’t act this way. But then again…normal women don’t run around thinking they are STARS.
I know that most reality TV shows are contrived, but I honestly felt like the argument between Alex and Sonja was so fake. Now that Bethenny is gone, the show has lost some of its edge. Cindy is boring. Kelly is acting like a normal person so far. Jill and the Countess are still narcissistic and obnoxious. The only things that have changed are that Sonja and Alex are mouthier and more confrontational than they ever were in the past. It seems like they’re pretending to be different people just to stay on the show.
All I can say is Sonja really showed her ass. I was on the fence about her last season, sometimes the sexy talk was a bit too much and TMI. Now she is clearly buying her own hype and going down the Jill Zarin path of obnoxiousness.
The thing is – I like Sonja. I like Alex too. I am still not sure how I feel about the whole blowup between the two of them. I think they both overreacted and could have handled things differently. On another note – I am liking Luann more this year. I know some people will disagree but she seems happier and less catty than last year – like she’s not drinking as much of the “Jill Koolaid”.
