Jason Hoppy’s Basketball Days

Jason Hoppy, who was the scoring leader in 1988-89 on the 28-1 Hazleton High championship basketball team and then went on to a spectacular court career at the University of Scranton, will be inducted into the Hazleton Area Sports Hall of Fame on Sunday, Sept. 21.

The 1988-89 Mountaineers, coached by Bruce Leib, won the Wyoming Valley Conference Division I and PIAA District 2 Class AAAA titles before they were defeated by Penn Wood, 66-64, in a PIAA Eastern semifinal heartbreaker.

Hoppy, standing 5-foot-10, averaged 14.7 points a game as a high school senior.

That team set a school record for most consecutive victories (28) and had three other players averaging in double figures: Jeff Antolick, 14.4, Rich Hudock, 12.6, and Brian Billig, 11.8.

At Scranton, coached by Bob Bessior, Hoppy was a starter at shooting guard all four seasons for the Royals.

Hoppy, the sixth leading scorer in Scranton basketball history with 1,717 career points, received NABC All-America honors in 1993.

He was selected for the All-Middle Atlantic Conference all-star first team in both 1992 and 1993. He was named to the University of Scranton Royals Wall of Fame in 2003.

He was Scranton’s scoring leader in 1992 and 1993. In addition to 1,717 points, he finished college career with 342 assists and 365 rebounds. He was a 50 percent field goal shooter, connecting on 674 of 1,346 attempts.

He also holds the university record for the most filed goals in one season with 259.
