Southern Belles revisited.
Perhaps it’s the “After-School Special” narration. Maybe it’s the dull story lines of these not-so-independent women. Or the entire premise of a reality show originating in Louisville, Kentucky of all places. Whatever the reason, I can’t get into these women.
Emily Gimmel, 24, is really more Orange County than Kentucky. The amount of makeup on her face makes look much older. Her father is a skeevy ( to borrow a New Jersey phrase) control freak to say the least. Her mother has that beaten-down look of a woman with a broken spirit. But he who holds the purse strings…….she live with her parents. Her narcissism rivals that of Vicki Gunvalson.
Kellie Frey 32, is twice divorced and came out on the short end of the divorce settlement. She decides to start a matchmaking business, aptly named Dating Sucks.
Hadley Hartz 26, is likeable and normal, with commitment issues. Too normal for reality TV. She dates nice guy Sterling, but really likes the not-so-nice types. She works as a personal assistant, and gasp!…they show her in a Laundromat.
Shea Johnson is the most complex character. She’s attempting to force her cheating boyfriend into marrying her.In fact, she and her equally skeevy father begin planning the wedding long before the proposal. From what I’ve read, he backed out (ran for the hills is more like it)
Julie Smith, 35, was a successful model in the south. Apparently she never thought about life after modeling. As the token African-American in the mix, she has virtually no storyline, and virtually no connection to the other women. Bad call, Soapnet. I’ve been to retirement parties that were more fun than her sad 35th birthday party. the saddest thing was the pink flower in her hair.
Why do these women wear flowers and childish barrettes in their hair? Maybe it’s a southern thing.
